About

Erich Fitzgerald is Senior Curator (Vertebrate Palaeontology) and Harold Mitchell Fellow at Museum Victoria in Melbourne, and is a Research Associate of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He received his doctorate from Monash University. Prior to his current appointment, Fitzgerald was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. His primary interest is the evolution of marine mammals, which encompasses the palaeobiology, morphology, and systematics of cetaceans, pinnipeds, and sirenians. Fitzgerald's current major research effort lies in documenting and analyzing the fossil record of Cenozoic marine vertebrates in Australasia. He also collaborates with various colleagues in the study of Early Cretaceous mammals, dinosaurs and aquatic reptiles.
